Teaching and Facilitating
I am an experienced workshop leader and lecturer, delivering creative writing and playwriting sessions as well as lecturing in small scale producing for a number of post-graduate courses at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. I use drama games and fun writing exercises to make sessions imaginative, creative, engaging, practical and playful.
I believe, absolutely passionately, in encouraging young people to write creatively and to access all of the arts with an open and enthusiastic mind.
I have led workshops for all ages and abilities, from primary school students to elderly care home residents, all over the country.
Previous clients include: Theatre Centre, Westminster Young Carers, Finchley Youth Theatre, Islington Summer University at the Pleasance Theatre, Notre Dame High School (Lambeth), Kingsbury High School, Bishop Tuffnel School (Bognor Regis), Sebright School (Hackney), NewShed Youth Theatre (Newham branch of Chicken Shed), South Hill Park Arts Centre, Freewheelers Theatre Company, Hazlitt Youth Theatre, Wycombe Swan Theatre, St Albans Arts, Gifted and Talented Youth in West Sussex, Manchester International Festival, Surrey Arts, Chichester Festival Theatre, dANTE or dIE Theatre, The U3A, Charters Adult Education, and The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.
Sessions can be tailored to any group's requirements.
Comments from workshop participants
“Rachel worked brilliantly with 30 of my more able writers in Years 5 and 6. She quickly developed a very good trust and rapport with the children and led them through the creative process of writing drama. They applied their learning by performing for their parents at the end of the school day. It was extremely well-received by both children and parents. I would not hesitate to have Rachel here again and I would recommend her to any other school without reservation. A wonderful learning experience!”
Head teacher, Bishop Tuffnel School, Chichester
"Your enthusiasm and love of literature shone through and certainly inspired me to write"
Workshop Participant - Charters Adult Education
“The gang had a great day yesterday and really enjoyed your workshop. It was exhausting, exhilarating, stimulating and challenging all rolled into one day.”
Artistic Director - Freewheelers Theatre Company
"I just wanted to say thank you very much for all the help you gave me with my script. You helped me produce something I am really proud of, and helped me develop my script writing skills. In fact, I have appeared to have caught the writing bug, as am already starting writing on a new project, with some other ideas developing. I'm sure I've said this all before but I really wanted to say it again and thank you."
Student - Godalming College
"Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!"
Teacher - INSET day course
"Enthusiasm is great. You were inspiring, patient, and fun! I've learnt a lot and feel fired up to go home and continue. Great value." Workshop Participant - Farnham Maltings
"A very useful day - despite having done many workshops in the past, this produced real results from the basic through to more stretching work on structure. Rachel was well prepared, full or ideas and enthusiasm." Workshop Participant - Farnham Maltings
